TIDE highlights challenges of protecting endangered Yellowhead Parrots on International Biodiversity Day

By BBN Staff: The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE), on the observance of International Biodiversity Day, highlighted its challenges with increasing the population of yellowhead parrots (YHP) in Belize.

TIDE has been monitoring yellowheads in Payne’s Creek National Park (PCNP) and adjacent Deep River Forest Reserve since 2014.

TIDE says their efforts have been a success in increasing the number of yellowhead parrots in the park through long hours or installing artificial nest boxes, monitoring of nests, surveillance and patrols by PCNP rangers and a partnership with Bird Conservancy and Belize Bird Rescue.

“This season has been extremely challenging. Park rangers are seeing increases of illegal entry into the park for hunting, logging on the park borders, and poaching of YHP. It’s painful to receive messages from the field of increased illegal entry,” TIDE said on Facebook.

“This past week, we received pictures of parrots monitored and reports of poached parrot chicks. Can’t imagine that even parrots that have a slim chance of surviving away from their nests were poached this past week. It’s as cruel as taking a newborn away from the warmth of his mom, not knowing how he would be fed and cared for,” TIDE’s statement continued.

TIDE also gave kudos to the rangers who perform the painstaking tasks of protecting the endangered species despite the challenges that persist.

“TIDE takes time out to thank all Protected Areas Managers on International Biodiversity Day! You make a positive difference!” the statement ended.
